Requirements for issue of Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

To be eligible for the grant of a Private Pilot Licence, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • AGE
  • EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
  • MEDICAL FITNESS
  • KNOWLEDGE
  • FLIGHT EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of 17 years at the time of application.

  • Successful completion of Class 10 or equivalent examination from a recognized Board.
  • Must hold a valid certificate of medical fitness issued by an approved medical practitioner, in accordance with the standards prescribed under Rule 39B by the Director-General.
  • Must pass the prescribed written examinations in:
    • Air Regulations
    • Air Navigation
    • Aviation Meteorology
    • Aircraft & Engines
  • Note: Applicants already holding a valid Private Pilot Licence (Helicopters) or a Commercial/ATPL (Helicopters) are required to pass only the Aircraft & Engines examination.
  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of 40 hours of flight time as pilot of an aeroplane, including the required solo and cross-country flying experience.
